Portugal Golden Visa: A Premier Pathway to EU Residency and Citizenship

The Portugal Golden Visa, officially known as the Residence Permit for Investment Activity (ARI), is one of the most sought-after residency-by-investment programs in Europe. Launched in 2012, the program has attracted thousands of investors globally, thanks to its flexible stay requirements, access to the Schengen Zone, and a clear pathway to permanent residency and citizenship.

It allows non-EU/EEA nationals to obtain a temporary residence permit in Portugal in exchange for a qualifying investment in the country.

Investment Options (As of 2024)

Portugal made significant changes to the Golden Visa rules in 2023, phasing out residential real estate investments. Current qualifying options include:

  1. Investment Funds (Most Popular Option):
    • Minimum investment of €500,000 in approved Portuguese venture capital or private equity funds.
    • Funds must invest in Portuguese businesses.
  2. Scientific Research or Innovation:
    • Contribution of €500,000 to scientific research in public or private institutions.
  3. Cultural Heritage or Arts:
    • Donation of €250,000 to support arts, culture, or heritage preservation.
  4. Job Creation:
    • Establish a business that creates at least 10 full-time jobs in Portugal.
  5. Business Expansion:
    • Invest in a company that creates or maintains jobs in Portugal with a capital transfer of €500,000.
