The UK Government has announced a significant shift in its visa system by introducing digital eVisas for most Pakistani nationals traveling for work or study. This change, effective from 15 July 2025, eliminates the need for a physical visa sticker in the passport for a majority of applicants.
According to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), eVisas serve as an online record of a person’s immigration status, including the conditions of their stay. Eligible individuals will now be able to view and manage their status through a secure UKVI online account.
This development is part of the UK’s broader efforts to modernize and digitize its immigration and border systems. Millions have already benefited from eVisas in other immigration categories, making the transition a tested and trusted one.
Jane Marriott CMG OBE, British High Commissioner to Pakistan, commented:
“These changes will simplify the process for students and professionals traveling to the UK, enabling them to retain their passports and manage their immigration status online with ease.”
Who is eligible?
The eVisa system now applies to main applicants in the following visa categories:
- Students (including short-term study visas up to 11 months)
- Global Business Mobility (Senior/Specialist Worker, Graduate Trainee, UK Expansion Worker, Service Supplier, Secondment Worker)
- Global Talent
- International Sportsperson
- Skilled Worker (including Health and Care Worker)
- Temporary Work (Charity Worker, Creative Worker, Government Authorised Exchange, International Agreement, Religious Worker)
- Youth Mobility Scheme
Holders of eVisas can link their travel document (e.g. passport) to their UKVI account, ensuring smoother international travel. The ‘View and Prove’ service will also allow users to securely share their immigration status with third parties like employers and landlords.
Important to Note:
- Applicants applying as dependants or under other visa categories, such as general visitor visas, will still receive a physical visa sticker.
- Those with an existing valid visa sticker in their passport do not need to take any action at this time.
- The UK Government plans to expand eVisas to all visa routes in the future, creating a fully digital, secure, and efficient system for all travelers.
